Bored of wearing the same outfits all the time? Do you feel like a makeover is necessary for the new year? Living a colourful life is easier than you think and it doesn’t cost much to do. With a little tweak here and there, you can transform your wardrobe without having to make much effort. Here are some suggestions as to how to accessorise with shoes, bags and jewellery in order to update your wardrobe for the new year.
When wearing black
Just because you like wearing black doesn’t mean you can’t mix it up with colours. In fact, black provides a great canvas for colourful statement pieces to ‘pop’. Let’s start with the choice of shoes – apart from choosing shoes that compliment my clothes, I usually go for comfort (I have to be able to walk in them!!). Due to the nature of my design business, I have to do a lot of walking during a research period. This is when my sneakers and flats become my best work companions whom I know will always give me the support that I need. I like wearing bright coloured shoes when wearing black to add some vibrancy to the look. All black is great but when not done properly, one can end up looking overly goth. To finish off the look, I like accessorising with bangles and necklaces, especially statement pieces that deserve centre stage treatment, as the one shown in the picture below.
By adding colours to your shoes or jewellery, this will draw attention to your feet or neckline which will make them stand out.
Christopher Kane buckle sneakers (these are incredibly comfortable) and MASE Precious Kira clutch bag
Draw attention to your neckline – statement necklaces are great for brightening up a plain outfit
When wearing denim
I’m a big fan of denim, it’s the most versatile and comfortable material to wear plus it’s easy to dress up or down. For a causal look, I like to pair up my denim jeans with a plain top accessorised with a chunky statement necklace and a colourful arm candy.
Tangram necklace, J brand cropped skinny jeans, H&M gold slippers and MASE Rene clutch
Wearing denim also gives you room to experiment with the choice of shoes to wear. Below I’m wearing my super comfy bright pink Melissa sandals and my current favourite carryall, a Converse metallic backpack.

The minor details
If you are new to colour mixing and not sure where to start, try using a design print you love and use it as a guide/inspiration. For example, you can start with picking a colour from your favourite printed bag and add it to your nails. Next step would be to refer to the other colours in the print for your top and bottom pieces to complete the look. The MASE Florence mini and turquoise nails shown below would go well with green, purple, peachy orange, white and black.
Use your favourite accessories as colour guides. Here I’m using one of the colours featured in my Florence mini for my nails.
Hope this post will give you some ideas for colour mixing your new/existing clothes and accessories. Most major sales have already started so have fun shopping for the new year!
